Childbirth: A Multimedia Course and Resource Kit offers six unique features:
First, it uses varied media – video clips, audio clips, images, and graphics – to enrich information quality and model critical skills. For example, you can watch parents and hear their advice as they apply the same techniques you are learning from the physician. Video clips show how to breathe during contractions; positions to use for pushing; ways your partner can assist with pain relief; and techniques for feeding, bathing and burping a newborn.
“Learning by viewing,” or watching skills being modeled by others, is second only to “learning by doing” in helping you retain critical information. It is far more effective than simply reading words on the page or screen.

You are at the helm, selecting topics you want or need to know when you want or need the information. If you need refreshment in a particular area, return to the topic or subtopic. If you already know enough about a subject, skip it entirely. Optional self-assessments at the end of each lesson let you gauge how well you have mastered key points.

Lessons provide all the information needed to create a personalized Birth Plan, or “vision,” to ensure you, your partner, and your healthcare providers work in concert to give you the birth experience you want.
The Resource Kit includes: sample questions you can use to choose a doula or midwife; a Birth Plan template; sample questions for follow-up doctor visits for yourself and your child; information to have at hand if you call a pediatrician about your newborn’s well-being; and suggestions to help you plan baby showers, choose baby names, and announce your baby’s birth. Fifth, you can navigate through all information quickly and efficiently via a friendly and well-designed user interface. Follow the lessons sequentially, or simply click on the Lesson Selection Menu or Lesson Topics menu to locate a particular lesson or topic of interest. Visual cues tell you how far you have progressed in a lesson and how long each lesson lasts, letting you plan your time effectively.
Sixth, you can click on the Main Menu icon to access the Help feature. Help will show a typical lesson page, highlighting help topics with a flashing yellow icon. Click on the highlighted icon – such as the Childbirth Timetable icon, the Progress Bar, the Dictionary or the Time Duration icon – to see its function. Additional Help topics are also available.
